Gridspiration is a new FREE Genesis Child Theme. A few days ago, I asked if you want a free version of a child theme that I created for myself and published as Gridspiration.com. It’s not a typical theme, so I was wondering if anyone would be interested in something like this.
Fortunately, I’ve got a lot of positive responses and decided to move forward and release the Genesis Child Theme.
The theme comes as is. There are no widget areas, no navigations and only one layout option (full width).
What Gridspiration theme can be used for:
- Article directory,
- Website directory,
- Design gallery,
- WordPress themes gallery…

How to use it?
Settings
Once you install the theme, go to the “Genesis -> Theme Settings” tab and find the “Gridspiration Settings” section. You can easily change twitter link, rss link, footer text and choose the categories for the 5 main columns. See the screenshot below:

Content
I used Custom Metaboxes and Fields script to add some extra settings to the post edit screen.
When you add a new post, all you need is Title, Gridspiration Options, Categories and Featured Image. Here is an example:

Before you download the theme, make sure you have the Genesis Framework installed.

I’m going to use this to create a showcase of Real Estate Themes that I like – you know, as a reference point. Only problem is, I”m stuck on a title. So till I figure that part out, gonna have to wait, heh…
Send me a link when you use it. I’d love to see the Gridspiration theme in action.
Looks very interesting as a portfolio page as well. Is there a copyright I have to use?
The theme, like every WordPress theme, is GPL. But it would be nice if you link to my site when you use it. So, I’ll produce more free stuff in the future
Great theme! I’m definitely going to play with this.
One recommendation though. Make the single posts redirect to the site’s URL in case someone lands on a page like this: http://gridspiration.com/websites/the-blog-of-tim-ferriss/
There’s a few ways you can do it:
- Use the same field name as Genesis’ custom redirect URI
- Set up your own redirect (this one searches post content for a URL and redirects there): https://gist.github.com/1250866
Thanks Bill,
good idea. I’ll think about it and maybe include it in next theme update.
Btw. thanks for “Custom Meta Boxes” script. It’s very useful
Bravo Rafal!
Exactly the direction GenesisWP needs to be headed. I’m going to use it as like my “network” site to show off my blogs. Any way I can add a menu bar? I would like to have the standard “about” “contact” and “event” pages?
You can edit functions.php file and remove line #96 where is:
remove_action( 'genesis_after_header', 'genesis_do_nav' );Then, you can display navigation but you will have to style it in CSS.
Ok, thanks.
Hi Rafal
I’m just writing an article for my site about Premise landing pages and spotted that you were the guy who did all the Premise graphics… so I came over to check your site.
Never thought that black and white could look so good.
Fabulous site and great looking free theme.
I’ll give you a link when I finish the article.
Thanks Keith!
Let me know if you have any questions about Premise graphics. Definitely share a link to the article!
Nice. When you call this a child theme, does that mean I need something else?
Brilliant Rafal, looking good!
If you were going to further expand on this theme, I think a nice addition would be some form of rss system whereby you could have the collumns retreive posts (including the first image from that post) from an external blog and then output that to the page – would be really good for a personal page if you want to show of the multiple blogs you have and their content.
Good job though!
Looking nice but options not available as Genesis other Child theme. Need to add more widget area to this theme to do more work… anyway, thanks.
Thanks for the great organized theme. It is very clean and useful.
Is there a way to have a category page that is not in the main grid display correctly?
here is an example.

thanks again
Thanks again for a great theme, I figured out my previous question. We have created calgoldenbear.com using your grid… thought you would like to see your theme put to good use.
Cheers
Great theme! Thanks to share it.
I tried to add the “Addthis” code as you did but I don’t know how to put it at the right side.
ciao
